The West Highland Lines are world class railways making a major contribution to accessibility for residents, tourists and freight in this uniquely beautiful part of Scotland. ScotRail trains link the West Highlands with Glasgow where there are connections with trains to the rest of Britain. There is also an overnight Caledonian Sleeper linking Fort William and intermediate West Highland stations with London.

This website gives an introduction to the line, with pictures of the spectacular scenery brought to you by award-winning photographer Norman McNab, and others as attributed.

The latest developments are highlighted in the News section (see Menu Bar at above picture)

About the Society

The Friends of the West Highland Lines promote development of the train services through the West Highlands. We want high quality trains, more frequent services, through tickets and reliable connections with ferries and local buses. Better transport for local people and visitors will increase accessibility and benefit the economy of the Highlands.

The Friends publish a magazine, West Highland News Plus, three times per year containing the latest news, photographs and historical articles covering the WEST HIGHLAND LINES, plus the SCOTRAIL NETWORK, and ON THE WATERFRONT ferry news. This is free to members of the Society. Members can also attend our AGM which is normally held in the spring at locations on the West Highland Lines. The range of guest speakers over the years have given interesting insights into the operation and organisation of rail transport through the rugged countryside of the West Highlands. See the News Section for the latest information.

The West Highland

The West Highland Lines pass through Scotland's first national park and a vast area of the West Highlands with world renowned beauty. The lines' destinations in Oban, Fort William, and Mallaig are among the most popular tourist locations in Scotland, and are the principal economic centres for the region. The Fort William - Mallaig line has achieved worldwide coverage through the Harry Potter films and Jacobite steam train.

Fort Williams

Fort William (An Gearasdan) is the outdoor capital of the UK, at the head of Loch Linnhe and at the foot of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. It is the northern terminus of the West Highland Way long distance path.

The largest town in Lochaber, Fort William has every facility including hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets and a sports centre.

It is a mountaineering centre for Ben Nevis and adjacent mountains. The Nevis Range Gondola system gives access to skiing areas in winter and transports walkers into the hills in summer. Fort William also hosts the Mountain Bike World Championship and Scottish Six Day Motorcycle Trial.
